The Lantern Festival or the Spring Lantern Festival (元宵节 yuánxiāo jié) is a Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the Lunar Chinese calendar. Usually falling in February or early March on the Gregorian calendar, it marks the final day of the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations. As early as the Western Han Dynasty (206 BCE-CE 25), it had become a festival with great significance. During the Lantern Festival, children go out at night carrying paper lanterns and solve riddles on the lanterns (猜灯谜). Most importantly, people gather with families and have Tangyuan (Rice ball: 汤圆), which is a glutinous rice ball typically filled with sweet sesame paste, or peanut butter. We Chinese people believe the round shape of the balls, and the bowls in which they are served, symbolize family togetherness, and that eating tangyuan may bring the family happiness and good luck in the new year.
Here in Wellturn, we celebrated the Lantern Festival with our families at work: our colleagues. We gathered around and shared fun stories about what each one of us did during the Chinese New Year holidays while having hot bowls of freshly cooked tangyuan. It was a moment which showed tremendous company togetherness, and deep down we all wished for the best luck and fortune for our beloved company in 2019.
